The daughter of an immigrant and a third generation American, Representative Adela Ruiz was raised to believe in the value of hard work, self-sacrifice, and justice. She’s an alumna of UC San Diego and UCLA, where she earned a B.A. in public policy and a J.D. law degree.

Before entering politics, she worked as a civil rights attorney. Her reputation as a strong policy advocate attracted the attention of Senator Callahan, who recruited her as part of an advising team.

Rep. Ruiz is the first Mexican American to represent the 52nd congressional district of California. In the four years she’s been a member of Congress, her legislation has helped expand voter access and protect pregnant people’s right to bodily autonomy.

The middle of three sisters, Rep. Ruiz is a devoted aunt to her niece Adela and nephew Sebastian. She enjoys spending time with her family.
